The weather here has still been incredibly warm and sunny, aside from the mornings, and I’m soaking it up while I can. Once the cold and rain comes, it sticks around for far too long, so I’ll take all the Indian summer days I can get. The warm sun inspired me to fire up the grill and try out a recipe from the cookbook, Make it Paleo. I was thrilled to receive a copy of this book in the mail last week and haven’t had a chance to dig too far into it yet. I decided on the cinnamon steak skewers and paired them with baked beets and fennel (from Practical Paleo), and steamed lacinato kale with avocado oil drizzled on top. The cinnamon brought a lovely warmth to the steak and I was surprised how well it complemented the beef.  Jesse enjoyed the skewers too, and rightfully so … he was the grill master this time around.

Cinnamon Steak Skewers from Make it Paleo
Ingredients:
  • Four, 6 oz steaks (I used grass-fed top round)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • Sea salt and pepper to taste

Process:

  1. Soak wooden steak skewers in water for an hour prior to grilling.
  2. Cut steaks into cubes and place in a 1-gallon ziplock bag.
  3. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the marinade ingredients.
  4. Pour marinade over steak, seal ziplock bag and marinate in the refrigerator at least 1 hour, up to 24 hours.
  5. Preheat grill to high heat.
  6. Skewer steak onto wooden skewers.
  7. Grill skewers 12 -16 minutes, turning every 3-4 minutes.
  8. Plate steak skewers over your choice of salad or sides, and serve.
